Christopher Nolan was born on July 30, 1970, in Westminster, London. He grew up splitting time between England and the United States.
1998 — Following
Nolan wrote, directed, and funded his first feature film himself for $6,000, shooting on weekends over the course of a year while he and his crew held other jobs.
2000 — Memento
His second film earned him his first Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Screenplay. It was his first industry-funded production.
2005 — Batman Begins
Nolan co-wrote and directed the relaunch of the Batman franchise. The film grossed over $372 million worldwide and was the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2005.
2008 — The Dark Knight
The sequel grossed over $1 billion worldwide and received eight Academy Award nominations. It remains one of the highest-grossing films ever made.
2010 — Inception
Nolan had been developing this film for nearly a decade and it grossed over $800 million and won four Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
2014 — Interstellar
Nolan co-wrote and directed this science fiction film. It grossed over $700 million worldwide and received five Academy Award nominations, winning Best Visual Effects.
2023 — Oppenheimer
The film grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It is the highest-grossing biographical drama in history.
2024 — Knighted
King Charles III knighted Nolan in March 2024 for his contributions to film. He is now formally addressed as Sir Christopher Nolan.
